Tucked away in a corner of the African savannah, the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is a landscape of contrasts. Flanked by the ancient Waterberg mountain range, the sweeping grassy plains spread out like an artist’s canvas, reflecting the shades of Africa. Honey-hued vegetation springs forth from the rich red soil, too unfertile to be cultivated, as if in defiance of humankind’s commercial needs. Instead, the indigenous fauna and flora has flourished, providing a secluded, untouched haven, which is the Welgevonden. It is here that guests will find Ekuthuleni Lodge, a place of peace, and Tshwene Lodge, an oasis in a rugged valley.

In the far north of the Kruger National Park, in a wilderness area previously uninhabited by visitors to the Park, lies the vast concession awarded to The Outpost as a result of a ground-breaking agreement between the Makuleke community and the South African National Parks Board.

After South Africa returned to democracy in the 1990s, a land claim by the Makuleke people, who had been forcibly removed from the region in 1969, culminated in an agreement conferring title of the region to the Makulekes, provided it remains part of the Park and is used only for limited ecotourism. The Outpost is the first lodge to be built in this vast region. The lodge's contemporary design blends seamlessly with its age-old natural surroundings, preserving the wilderness that is its home.
